木下監督は、鶴屋南北の原作にかなり手を加え、お岩の亡霊は伊右衛門の良心の呵責による妄想だという新解釈を与えている。また、この作品を日本の伝統的な絵巻物という視点で捉え、全編を俯瞰撮影の長回しで撮った異色作品。

　　1920或30年代的上海。　　创办小学多年并自任校长的陈绍常（石挥）早年丧妻，独自抚养两子建中、建平和一女建英。与他一起生活的大姐劝他续弦，他虽也有心，却因目睹挚友的爱女刘敏华备受后母虐待，断了念头。不久，挚友亡故，敏华辞别他后随后母迁居外地，一别十年。两人再见面时，敏华（朱嘉琛）已成长为独立自强却不失贤淑的新女性，因不愿再受后母摆布，她拜托绍常介绍一份工作。随后，她成为绍常的同事。　　成年的建中（韩非）如愿以偿成为某家银行的职员，因得经理赏识，他结识其女冯丽君（李浣青），很快变作其乘龙快婿，社会地位日益提高。建中夫妇认为绍常卑微的小学校长身份丢了他们的脸，劝他退休在家做老太爷，绍常虽一百个不情愿，却也乖乖听命。敏华接下他的工作。只是赋闲在家的日子不好过，每日时间都似他那块坏掉了的老怀表般静止不动。而将无聊心情讲给家人听时，家人或怨他有福不懂享、或自忙自事无暇顾他，他的失落一日多过一日，与建中夫妇的矛盾亦越来越多。　　又到一年清明时，拜祭亡妻时，绍常遇见前来祭母的敏华，感慨人到老年只能等死，敏华却认为人在中年的他正处于事业的黄金期，劝他再回学校教书。而听从敏华建议偷偷瞒着建中再回学校教书一事漏泄后，建中对他的态度更加冷淡，但他已铁了心。“天意怜幽草，人间爱晚晴”，其后，他无意间发现自己与敏华早已两情相悦，决定与她结婚，此事更令建中夫妇大为恼火。

　　二战后，美国作家马丁（约瑟夫•科顿 Joseph Cotten 饰）应好友哈里（奥逊•威尔斯 Orson Welles 饰）邀请到维也纳工作，岂料刚到达目的地就传来了哈里车祸身亡的消息。哈里葬礼上，马丁遇到了当地军官卡洛维，卡洛维很不客气的请他马上离开维也纳。马丁没有理会，决心留下调查出好友死亡的真相。　　马丁找到哈里的女友斯科姆特小姐（阿莉达•瓦莉 Alida Valli 饰）一起调查事件的真相。随着调查的深入，他们发现内幕越加扑朔迷离，首先是他们的房东遇害，接着马丁自己发现被人跟踪，而且他查出哈里死的时候还有个第三人在场。于是，一切关键就在于找出这个神秘的第三人。

　　During the cold and rainy off-season a man arrives in a seaside town and, giving his name only as Pierre, checks into the only hotel which remains open. His arrival arouses curiosity and a degree of suspicion, as people note that he appears to know the area, yet gives no explanation for his presence at that bleak time of year in the dead-end town.

　　Walter Williams (Brian Donlevy) is a take-charge captain of industry who has worked his way up in a San Francisco steel company from a position as a sheet metal worker. He loves his wife Irene (Helen Walker) very much and they have planned a vacation drive together. Irene cancels at the last minute claiming a toothache, but asks that Walter drive her cousin Jim Torrance (Tony Barrett) as far as Illinois. Walter agrees and he and Jim take off together but later Jim knocks Walter unconscious and takes the car only to be hit himself by a truck and killed, his body burned beyond recognition. Walter comes to and suffering a concussion and deep confusion from feeling betrayed by Irene hides out in a small Midwest town until guilt and peer pressure force him to go back to San Francisco and tell his story to the Police. But by the time Walter returns to San Francisco a clever detective Lieutenant Quincy (Charles Coburn) has uncovered some facts about Irene and her cousin' Jim. The police have been holding Irene for the murder of her husband Walter but release her considering that Walter was hiding out because he had killed Jim. Along the way to uncovering the truth in Court Walter realizes some hard fact about what he holds valuable and the trust he has put in those around him.

　　Beauty contest winner Patricia Knight's one bid for screen stardom was Columbia's Shockproof. Knight plays Jenny Wright, a convicted murderess paroled in the care of probation officer Griff Marat (Cornel Wilde). What begins as an aloof professional relationship eventually blossoms into romance. The fly in the ointment is shady Harry Wesson (John Baragrey), the gambler who inveigled Jenny into committing murder. The girl is torn between creature comforts offered her by Wesson and the promise of a clean life offered by Griff. 　　Synopsis　　Do-seong (Yoo Min) is a child monk who lives at a small mountain temple with the head monk (Byeon Ki-jong), learning the teachings of Buddha. He becomes attached to a young widow (Choi Eun-hee) who comes to pray at the temple, and the childless widow entreats the head monk to let her raise Do-seong as her own son. Conflict ensues when Do-seong's real mother (Kim Seon-young) appears, but she leaves the temple for the sake of her son's future. On the day the widow is to take the child down from the mountain, the head monk discovers that Do-seong has killed a bird by ensnaringit in a trap and decides not to let the boy go into the secular world. A Hometown in Heart demonstrates the camera technique and directorial skill of movies that appeared after the liberation of Korea."　　A Hometown in Heart, adapted from playwright Ham Se-deok's A Little Monk (Dong-seung), was hailed upon its release as "a masterpiece that marked a new pinnacle in Korean moviemaking after the liberation." Eschewing new-school sentimentality to quietly express a boy's longing for maternal love, the film unfolds the everyday lives of three generationsthe head monk, a young monk, and a little child monkagainst the backdrop of a quiet temple in the mountains. The long shots utilized by director of cinematography Han Hyung-mo to capture the beautiful scenery of the mountain temple from a distance received great critical acclaim at the time. Also, each of the film's characters is convincingly portrayed through the skillful direction of Yoon Yong-kyu. In particular, the scene which expresses Do-seong's desperate yearning for a mother's love and his birth mother's past visit to the temple by combining them into a dream sequence reveals deep consideration for articulating story and emotion via a compressed visual grammar without tending toward sentimentalism. The movie's final scene, in which Do-seong awakens from his dream and sets off down the path in search of his mother, is both touching and beautiful. The film also features Choi Eun-hee, in the part of the young widow who warmly embraces Do-seong with her love, in one of her first roles.　　Afterword:　　- Lee Kang-su, writing under the pseudonym of Kwak Il-byeong, first adapted playwright Ham Se-deok's A Little Monk (Dong-seung) into a screenplay, which was then shot for the silver screen with additional embellishments by the director.
